Hi, friends!
If you’ve been following me for a while, you may have noticed that this is pretty strictly an interior design blog (with a heavy focus on interior, and convenient exclusion of anything considered “exterior”). Outdoor stuff is just not my forte.
We have a great deck, but up until this week it was very, very sad. We had some patio furniture that Ben’s parents gave us when they moved, and it has served us well for the last four years. I accidentally left our umbrella open last summer, and it was caught by a gust of wind and shattered the table in the middle of the night. It was as terrifying as it sounds, and was nearly impossible to clean up. I replaced the shattered glass table with a metal Better Homes & Gardens table from Walmart that was on clearance at the end of the summer season.
Before:
After a long winter in Iowa, the deck was in desperate need of a date with a power washer. Ben spent a Saturday afternoon cleaning the deck and railings. A few summers ago, I painted the bench with bright turquoise exterior paint. It didn’t hold up very well, and I was so ready to strip it down and start fresh. The deck is clean now, and we’re planning to stain it when we have the perfect weather!
Here is a look at the deck with our old patio chairs before we power washed everything.
And after the date with the power washer…
I hit the bench with a few sheets of sandpaper, and was able to get the majority of the turquoise paint off! I’ll finish that part of the project later, but for now we at least have a nice, smooth, mostly paint-free bench. We might also remove all of the lattice and replace it with horizontal 2x4s. I’d love to paint the bench and railings white with a better exterior paint, and stain the floor of the deck with a warm wood stain.

I reached out to Better Homes & Gardens about promoting their line of home goods that is exclusively sold at Walmart. They have affordable, stylish furniture and home decor that can either be shipped online or picked up at your local Walmart. We did a mix of both, and the whole ordering and delivery process was a breeze.
I chose patio furniture that would be comfortable, inviting, and would complement our yellow house. I’m so happy with the new look, and I love spending sunny days out here relaxing and enjoying the new furniture! I also picked up some flowers from our local nursery, but Walmart has a great garden section as well.
Isn’t this so cheerful? I’ll share links to all of the Better Homes & Gardens products at the end of this post!
We love eating outside at this table when the weather is nice enough. These wicker chairs are already super comfy, and the cushions add a lot more squishy comfort!
This rocking chair conversation set definitely exceeded my expectations. The cushions have removable covers, the blue color is absolutely perfect, and the seat is deep enough for me to curl up my legs and relax. Assembling the furniture set was a breeze, and it didn’t require any special tools. The bistro table looks like concrete, but is actually ceramic! I love that the rocking chair and table frames look like wood, but are made from metal to withstand the weather.
All of the furniture, the placemats, and the rug are from Walmart!

If you’re looking for affordable, accessible, and stylish patio decor, the Better Homes & Gardens line at Walmart is full of excellent options that can be shipped straight to your door or conveniently picked up from your local Walmart store.
Stay tuned for phase two of this patio makeover: staining the deck and hopefully painting and replacing the railings! I also have a windowbox for flowers that I’m hoping to hang under that window, which is right above our kitchen sink.
Thank you so much, Better Homes & Gardens, for partnering with me to create an inviting and affordable patio retreat!
