Our Controversial Kitchen Rug

When I finally pressed “publish” on the post about our DIY kitchen update, I didn’t expect the overwhelming response I would receive. I put many hours into designing, sourcing, painting, and loving that room from top to bottom. Since I published the post a little over two months ago, it has been viewed thousands of times and been featured on Apartment Therapy, Buzzfeed, and various foreign home decorating and news websites.

Most of the response was very positive and encouraging. My favorite comments were from the people that were inspired to do similar projects in their own homes. The one kind of response that surprised me, and was much more present than I expected, was the rug-haters.

I can’t tell you how many comments I read that said things like “who the hell puts a rug in the kitchen?” or “I hope you buy your carpet cleaner in bulk”. One of my personal favorites was “just wait ’til someone drops lasagna on that pretty carpet”. (Still no lasagna on my carpet, but I will be very cautious with any subsequent lasagnas) Another observant commenter informed me that the rug in my photo was crooked. #thanks

My point in sharing all of this is to say that the internet is full of endless, differing opinions. For every negative comment scolding me about the dangers of a rug in the kitchen, there were five comments asking me where I bought it. I bought the 9×12 rug online from Wayfair.

When I went searching for the link this morning, everything directed me to the “area rug” section of Wayfair instead of the exact rug. I was quite worried, and decided the rug must be out of stock. After some moping and a quick text to my husband with the sad news, I did some scouting to find the rugs that are the most similar in style, pattern, color, and price. Thankfully, it is not out of stock! I finally found the exact link again, and have fixed the original links.

So if you loved the rug we chose and were hoping to purchase it yourself, here are links to some similar alternatives, and our exact rug at the end!

Last, but certainly not least…

Our Kitchen Rug is the Bungalow Rose Iris Area Rug. Ours is a 9×12, but they have other sizes, too!

Here are some photos of the rug in our kitchen.

I love the colors and the pattern and the soft cozy feel of the rug on my feet. We have not spilled anything on the rug, and I vacuum it every couple of days. We knew that spills would be a very real possibility, and decided that we were okay with that. So far, we’ve been pretty careful and haven’t had any accidents. But if that happens, I’m not going to freak out or lose sleep over the welfare a physical thing. It is a rug. We walk on it. It might get dirty, and I’m very okay with that possibility. In the mean time, we enjoy the coziness and color that it adds to our kitchen. I don’t regret the decision and I would totally do it again!

I’ve never been one for bright colors, but I LOVE that rug in your kitchen. I think it’s shows off you and it really gives the room unique character. I admire the way you put things together and care for your home. I’ve been inspired by your determined resourcefulness. 🙂

Thanks so much, Taylor! For a while I tried to shy away from color and make all neutral choices. But the more I studied and evaluated what I actually like in my home, I realized I just love color! Resourcefulness is so important and just takes determination and commitment! Thanks for your kind words 🙂

I totally agree it just makes the room seem happy! You can always vacuum and use carpet cleaner for any spills but it picks up the colors and make the kitchen seem bright and cheerful, like a place where you want to be. I love it and this is my exact kitchen lay out so I am thinking about copying this.

I think the rug is beautiful (as is the rest of your home). You could always spray it with Scotch Guard to protect it from spills and stains.

I think the rug is beautiful, as is the rest of your home. As for the dangers of spills and stains, you could try spraying the rug with Scotch Guard. That might protect it a little longer.

Don’t worry for 1 second about the rug in your kitchen. I’ve been living with oriental carpets in my kitchen for DECADES. And, they are perfect! They have been spilled on, puked on, you name it! We have two kids, animals, etc. and we live a normal life in our house and there are rugs in every room, including under the beds of my children (even as infants and toddlers). We even have oriental carpets in our bathrooms! Rugs are SO durable, they can be washed and like you pointed out, it’s just a rug. Good grief! Your kitchen is GORGEOUS!! I love every single thing about it! GREAT JOB!! <3

I love your rug! In fact that is why I visited your blog because I was hoping that you posted the purchase info. So, thank you! We too painted our kitchen using Annie Sloan CP! In fact, it has been almost four years and they are holding up very well. I love your style and can’t wait to explore the rest of your blog! Many blessings!

Simply beautiful, and I love how you confidently stick with your decisions! I came across your blog from a local design store here in my small town shared on Facebook the blog post of your kitchen make-over! It’s definitely been inspiring for me who loves my kitchen but has dark, dated cabinets. I’m hopeful I can make a change now! Thank you!
    God bless!

Oh my word… some people will nit pick everything. Well guess what! 3 houses ago I had a huge rug on my kitchen floor for YEARS. And it was perfect. No dropped lasagna or any other pasta dishes. And if there was a stray drop of liquid or food it was no problem to wipe up with Nature’s Miracle Stain remover. Love your choice and ignore the negative nellies.

Haters will be haters, just ignore them!! Some people just like to express negativity. I think your whole kitchen makeover is awesome, and the rug was my favorite! I actually came to your blog to get the link! 😀 The rug colors in your pic look so much more vibrant than the pics on Wayfair. Thanks for sharing!

I love what you did in your kitchen. A few years ago we painted our dark cabinets also. Your kitchen looks so much happier, it makes one want to cook something amazing. And the rug is fabulous, it brings everything together.

  16. Carla Avatar

I think the rug is genius! And a rug of that size can be used in so many different rooms in a future home. Well done!

I absolutely love what you did in your kitchen. No, rugs aren’t the first choice for a kitchen with some people…personally, I wouldn’t do it because I would hate to drop anything on it however, it is beautiful and brings such a welcoming effect and wonderful color. Love love love it.

WHERE did you get the rug? .(And the cost?

  20. Charlotte Lindsay Avatar

I actually really like having a rug in the kitchen. If you’re anything like me I am always cold, even if I am wearing socks. So carpeting in some fashion is a must in every room. Not only does a rug in your kitchen add something unique to your home decor, it protects your floor, creates warmth, and gives you a plush surface to stand on while cooking!

We lived in a parsonage for 8-1/2 years before we moved to another church and were able to buy a home. You have done a beautiful job of working with what you have on a “church mouse” budget. I fully understand why you chose a rug. In this circumstance it absolutely was/is your best option. Just ignore the naysayers and revel in the joy the rug gives you.

  22. Kel Avatar

I think the rug looks great! It ties everything in your kitchen together and gives the room real personality. Also, all the pattern will be great at hiding stains should anything get spilled on it 😉 Nice job!

  23. Katarina Avatar

Your kitchen has character! I love it.

  24. Catherine Avatar

I love your rug! It was a wonderful and colorful choice!
